Manchester City played a penalty shoot-out spectacular on Sunday evening against Liverpool FC in the Capital One Cup Final, winning the first silverware of the season with a score of 1-1 and 3-1 in penalties.

City’s reserve goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, was the hero of the game, proving the crowds wrong when he was chosen over favourite, Joe Hart, for the final match of the cup.

A collision between Mamadou Sakho and Emre Can proved fatal for Liverpool as Sakho was sent off in the 24th minute after medics made the decision that he was not in the best state. Much to his dismay, Sakho left the pitch full of rage and was replaced by Kolo Toure.

Brothers, Yaya Toure of Man City and Liverpool’s Kolo Toure met on the pitch to face each other, adding to the tension-filled stadium.

Defences were high throughout the game, with the first half of the League Cup Final ending in a 0-0 score. But The Sky Blue’s, Fernandinho changed the game with the first goal of the match in the 48th minute.

The yellow card repeatedly saw the light in the second half as referee, Michael Oliver, dealt it out 6 times: twice to Manchester City players, whilst the other 4 went to Liverpool players.

After scoring Liverpool their first goal in the 82nd minute, bringing the game to 1-1, Philippe Coutinho earned himself one of the four yellow cards for removing his shirt on the pitch.

The second half, with its added 4 minutes, ended in a draw of 1 all, sending the game into extra time, which saw no goals for either side, but a range of attempts, yellow cards and free kicks.

Man City goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, played strong in extra time blocking Liverpool’s various attempts to reach the net.

After a stressful 30 minutes in extra time, the game was taken all the way to penalties as predicted.

The Reds, and their manager Jurgen Klopp, went in confidently for the penalty shootout and started strong, scoring their first penalty but from this point it all went downhill.

Whilst Cabellero made a hat-trick of saves, it was Toure who scored the third penalty to award his team the Capital One Cup for the second time in three years and awarding manager, Manuel Pellegrini, his last piece of silverware with Manchester City.
