London is home to thousands of cyclists everyday, with many commuters constantly switching their typical mode of transport for the environmentally friendly cycle. With Boris Bikes around every corner, even tourists can partake in the popular transport. But cycling comes with a downside.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) recorded that there were around 18,400 bicycle accidents across the UK in 2017, 75% of which occurred in urban areas such as London.
According to the City Of London’s Traffic In The City 2018 report, the increase of cycling since 1997 to the year 2017 was 292% during daytime 12hr period, whilst all other forms of transport decreased.
With cycling the most favoured transportation, cyclist safety continues to be an ever-present issue in London, but CYCL have taken on the challenge to combat it.
London-based startup, CYCL launched on Kickstater in 2015 dedicating themselves to developing innovative cycling technology, starting with WingLights – directional indicators for bicycles for road safety purposes.
Fast forward to 2017, the 6-man team took WingLighs to Dragon’s Den and won with the backing of Nick Jenkins to develop their product and sell to the masses.
Today CYCL launches the WingLights 360 with the new feature of steady side lights for easier and constant visibility during the darker hours of the day and night that is activated by a continuous hold press.
The new addition of lights also maintain the original flashing indicators with one tap, shock and waterproof features, magnetic attachment for the end of your handlebars, a keyring size and are now USB rechargeable with 3 hours of battery and under 30 minutes of charging time.
WingLights has been labelled as the “Future Of Transport” by the UK government and CYCL have made 50,000 bikes safer, with 700 of those part of the Domino’s Pizza delivery service.
After frivolous night-time cycling tests on London streets, CYCL has made sure their newest product was beneficial to both the cyclist and drivers, with 85% of drivers more aware of the cyclist’s presence.
Founder, Luca Amadazzi says, “We have created product based on the concept that motor vehicles have white and red side lights. We wanted to recreate this for the bicycle market, to ensure cyclists’ positioning and intentions are clear to other road users.”
The WingLights 360 are available direct from CYCL’s website and start at around £20, perfect for everyday easy use with safety at the forefront.
